Big Bear Lake to Host Global Long-Distance Hiking Event Series as HIGHLANDER Expands to U.S.

International hiking adventure company brings the new, multi-day event to America

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. A once sought-after destination during the California Gold Rush will now be a real gold mine for hikers ready to push their physical limits and be in complete harmony with nature for a few days.

Big Bear Lake is the crown jewel of the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California and will serve as the inaugural U.S. location for the internationally acclaimed HIGHLANDER event series beginning on Sept. 27 until October. 2. 2022, when HIGHLANDER Adventure expands to America.

HIGHLANDER Big Bear Lake Hiking will offer three different styles The three formats are HIGHLANDER (60 miles), a five-day journey; HIGHLANDER (30 miles) which is a three-day trip and HIGHLANDER (15 miles) which is a weekend getaway.

HIGHLANDER is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Through the HIGHLANDER hike, every participant connects with nature and begins to view life from a different perspective. The trail is a test for participants, but they’ll conquer it, making new friends and using all five senses along the journey. Since HIGHLANDER is not an actual race and there are no winners or losers, the participants — even strangers — will cheer one another up.

HIGHLANDER was launched in Croatia in the year 2017 when the three friends Jurica Barac, Igor Mlinarevic, and Andrej Mlinarevic have decided to share their passion and desire for long-distance hiking. It has since expanded to become a worldwide series in 15 countries, comprising Austria, France, Greece, Morocco, Slovenia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Our goal is to inspire people to go hiking and thus change themselves to improve their lives in both mental and physical health,” said HIGHLANDER Adventure’s co-founder and CEO Jurica Barac. ”That is why we are delighted and proud that HIGHLANDER is finally coming to the American ground. America is a land that is stunning in its natural beauty, and those who want to shift in their lifestyle. We believe that the long-distance hiking HIGHLANDER will be a total satisfaction.”

“HIGHLANDER is an extended-distance hiking experience accessible to all who want to test their limits while learning about sustainable living,” Barac added. “For the very first time ever, it will be the first time that a HIGHLANDER event will be held in America, within Big Bear Lake, California with its awe-inspiring scenery and stunning landscapes. So I invite everyone to join us beginning on the 27th of September and take a step forward with us.

“Thanks to our strategic partner worldwide Spartan Race, Visit Big Bear, and the HIGHLANDER team who have been working on this venture for months in order to bring our “Adventure of a Lifetime” to America. Come on out and join us on the trail!

The year 2021 was the first time Spartan The world’s most renowned endurance sports and extreme wellness brand acknowledged HIGHLANDER’s potential for partnering with Spartan as an important strategic player opening the way for the introduction of this unique, long-distance adventure-hiking occasion to the U.S.

The mission, vision, and beliefs shared by these two brands share the same foundation which is to build mental and physical toughness to bring about positive lifestyle changes.

“Spartan’s collaboration with HIGHLANDER allows us to encourage many more people across the world to participate in physically demanding sports that they feel are beyond their abilities”,” added Spartan Race founder and CEO Joe De Sena. “This is about identifying our limits and then striving to push past them.”

Every HIGHLANDER event has its own unique venue that ranges from vast deserts to mountain tops that are snowy, and from sandy dunes to pastures and lakes and pastures that are attractive to modern-day nomadic travelers.

Participants are encouraged to put down their smartphones and fully immerse themselves in nature as they join the worldwide HIGHLANDER community of hikers.

“The HIGHLANDER approach strikes the perfect balance between guided trekking and self-sufficient trek,” said Peter Watson, acclaimed travel writer photographer, writer as well as HIGHLANDER ambassador. “With all the logistics being taken care of, I can enjoy all the freedom of hiking on my own, but with the added benefit of having less weight to carry and not worrying about meals or fuel routing, planning the route, or searching for campsites suitable for my needs every single day. Instead, I can focus on the next trail and relish the views.”

“HIGHLANDER is also a fantastic opportunity to meet other like-minded individuals and make friends while hiking,” Watson added. “Even though I’m a solo hiker, I’m sure that other hikers are always within reach and are always willing to stop to chat. The evenings are fun and social with hikers sharing stories over a campfire. I’ve kept in touch with many people I met on the trail and we’re already planning other HIGHLANDER treks.”
